ASPA Directors

Welcome to the Australian Secondary Principals’ Association.

This onboarding portal has been created to help new Directors become familiar with ASPA’s operations, governance, systems, and key responsibilities. The information below provides a step-by-step guide to support your transition into the role.

STEP 1

As incoming Directors of ASPA, all Directors are required to obtain an ASIC Director ID and provide relevant details for company registration purposes.

Please complete the onboarding form.

STEP 2

ASPA Operations & Board Conventions

  • ASPA pays travel, accommodation, and meal costs for attendance at the four annual face-to-face meetings, which rotate across Australian state and territory capital cities over a two-year cycle. ASPA aims to minimise weekend travel where possible; however, this may occasionally be unavoidable.

  • ASPA also holds four online meetings each year, alternating with the face-to-face meetings. These meetings are typically 90 minutes in duration.

  • Directors’ assistance in organising meetings or engagement opportunities with local Ministers and government officials is appreciated where appropriate.

  • ASPA generally operates through a consensus-based approach to decision making. Formal voting is uncommon and is typically reserved for matters relating to governance, elections, or constitutional amendments.

  • Board communication occurs regularly via email, and Directors are encouraged to contact the Executive directly where guidance, clarification, or support may be required, including in relation to media matters or external communications.

  • The Executive Director is responsible for ASPA’s operational management and day-to-day decision making, while also seeking advice and input from Directors where appropriate.

  • It is standard practice for affiliated associations to send delegations to the ASPA Summit. While participation involves a cost, it provides valuable opportunities for direct involvement in national policy discussions and supports ASPA’s advocacy work on behalf of members.

  • ASPA requests affiliated associations to share their mailing lists annually to support communication with members. Communications are used carefully and sparingly and may include:

    • It is used for our quarterly bulletin, which is important to inform members on our activities, and passively helps you justify the cost of affiliation. It also builds our capacity to attract sponsorship, as we can use it for sponsor ads.

    • Very occasionally, we use it to send out an ‘Opportunities’ email, which links people to research, programs such as our Next Gen learning and Entrepreneurial Schools offer; Federal Govt initiatives such as teacher scholarships, NBN subsidies, and NGO offers such as Raise Foundation, Headspace, and others that might be useful to schools.

    • It helps us fulfil the terms of our contract with the Federal Government, worth $80,000 annually.
