Michael Battenally B.Sc (ANU), Dip.Ed (UC), MAICD
Michael is Principal at Melba Copland Secondary School in the ACT. Throughout his 30 year career in ACT education, Michael continues his effort to contribute to and foster opportunities for young Australians as Principal of Melba Copland Secondary School, and formally as Principal of Lake Ginninderra College.
His early years of teaching in the 80s paralleled the introduction of computing studies into secondary school curriculum. The vocational education reforms of the early 90s involved Michael in a range of information technology curriculum development projects and school-based certification pathways for students.
As a school Principal for over 10 years Michael has benefited from leading change as an educator and school leader. Driven by a significant involvement in professional associations and through this advocating for developing current and emerging school leaders.
Michael is committed to fostering partnerships between schools to create new opportunities for students. He has a strong interest in promoting effective governance to improve partnership and community participation in schools. Most recently his school led a successful partnership to establish a gifted and talented science and mathematics program involving students from five local primary schools, expert teachers, and academics from ANU and CSIRO. His current school is invested in intercultural understanding and improving outcomes for all students. A feature of this work includes targeted programs for indigenous students and awareness of first nation culture.
